17.37

潭州中峯羅浮希聲禪師。僧問。為國開堂於此日。師將何法報君恩。師曰。庭前瑞雪落紛紛。僧云。君恩如此報祖意又如何。師曰。且領前話。僧云。恁麼則金枝永茂玉葉長芳。師曰。一任眾人看。乃曰。雲生大野霧鎖長空。三草二木悉歸師子吼。露滴庭莎盡稱無邊妙相。猿啼鳥噪皆談不二圓音。乃拈拄杖曰。無邊妙義盡在山僧拄杖頭上。若也會得。可謂應時應節。若不會萬年松在祝融峯。卓一下。二月八日無疾坐終。茶毘諸根不壞。舍利求者可掬。

Chan Master Xisheng of Luofu at Zhongfeng in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "Opening the hall for the nation on this day, with what Dharma will the master repay the sovereign's benevolence?" The master said, "Before the courtyard, auspicious snow falls in profusion." The monk said, "The sovereign's benevolence being repaid like this, what about the Patriarch's meaning?" The master said, "Just accept the former words." The monk said, "If so, then the golden branches will flourish forever, and the jade leaves will be fragrant for long." The master said, "I let everyone see as they will." He then said, "Clouds arise over the great wilderness, mist locks the vast sky. The three kinds of grass and two kinds of trees all return to the lion's roar; dew drops upon the courtyard sedge fully accord with the boundless wondrous marks; the cry of monkeys and clamour of birds all discuss the non-dual complete sound." He then picked up his staff and said, "The boundless wondrous meaning is entirely on the tip of the mountain monk's staff. If you understand it, you may be said to respond to the time and season. If you do not understand, the pine of ten thousand years is on Zhurong Peak." He struck once. On the eighth day of the second month, without illness, he passed away sitting. At his cremation, the sense organs were undamaged, and those who sought relics could gather them by the handful.
