17.39

鼎州永安妙喜禪師。僧問。如何是國師三喚侍者。師召大德。僧應喏。師曰。鈍根漢。僧云。向上還有事也無。師曰。汝看虛空還曾開口麼。僧契悟禮謝。師與一頌曰。虛空開口喚須彌。聲隱春雷蟄者知。若不仙陀徒擬議。負吾負汝自風移。

Chan Master Miaoxi of Yong'an in Dingzhou. A monk asked, "What was the National Teacher calling his attendant three times?" The master called out, "Great Virtuous One!" The monk answered, "Yes?" The master said, "Dull-rooted fellow." The monk said, "Is there still anything beyond?" The master said, "Look at empty space: has it ever opened its mouth?" The monk attained awakening, bowed, and gave thanks. The master presented him with a verse: / "Empty space opens its mouth to call Mount Sumeru; / The sound concealed like spring thunder, hibernating creatures know. / If not for Saindhava, in vain do you deliberate; / Failing me and failing you, the wind shifts on its own."
