Chan Master Puneng of Qingshan Cloister in Hangzhou was a son of the Lü family of the same commandery. Ascending the hall, [he said], "Having no alternative, I tangle vines with you all. All sentient beings, merely because the mind-dust is not cast off and emotional calculations are not eliminated, seeing forms and hearing sounds, follow the waves and chase the billows, transmigrating through the three realms and sinking in the four modes of birth, causing right view to be obscure and encountering obstruction wherever they go. If right and wrong are both eliminated and good and evil are utterly forgotten, sitting through the heads of the reward and transformation Buddhas and cutting off the paths of sages and worldlings, only upon reaching here is there a little accord. Even if it is thus, on the part of a patch-robed monk it is not yet extraordinary. Why is it so? As soon as right and wrong arise, the mind is confusedly lost! Bah!" Ascending the hall, he took up his staff and said, "Before entering the mountain monk's hand, the myriad phenomena were just as they were; having entered the mountain monk's hand, what matter is there again?" After a long pause, he said, "When there is high spirit, add high spirit; / Where there is no charm, there is also charm." He struck his staff once.
