17.45

杭州靈鳳山萬壽法詮禪師。僧問。如何是佛。師曰。抱樁打拍浮。曰如何是法。師曰。黃泥彈子。曰如何是僧。師曰。剃除鬚髮曰三寶外還別有為人處也無。師舉起一指。僧曰。不會。師曰。指在唯觀月。風來不動幡。上堂。德山棒臨濟喝。盡是無風波匝匝。燈籠𨁝跳過青天。露柱魂驚腦頭裂。雖然如是。大似食鹽加得渴。喝一喝。

Chan Master Faquan of Wanshou on Mount Lingfeng in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The master said, "Holding a post and splashing water." [The monk] asked, "What is the Dharma?" The master said, "Pellets of yellow mud." [The monk] asked, "What is the Saṅgha?" The master said, "Shaving off the beard and hair." [The monk] asked, "Apart from the Three Jewels, is there still any other place for helping people?" The master held up a single finger. The monk said, "I do not understand." The master said, "When the finger points, only view the moon; / When the wind comes, the banner does not move." Ascending the hall, [the master said], "Deshan's blow of the stick, Linji's shout: / All are wavelets overlapping without wind. / The lantern jumps over the blue sky; / The open pillar's soul is terrified and its head splits. / Even though it is thus, it is very much like eating salt to add to thirst." He gave a shout.
