Chan Master Huizhao Qingyu of Dahong in Suizhou was a native of Yingzhou, surnamed Hu. Ascending the hall, he said: "Stepping forward, one treads on the king's water and grass; stepping backward, one tramples on one's ancestors' fields and gardens. Neither advancing nor retreating, one is right in dead water. Is there still a way to emerge? In the rustling evening sound, pine needles are short; / In the drifting spring breeze, willow strands are long." Ascending the hall, he cited Chuanzi's injunction to Jiashan: "'You must conceal your body where there are no traces, but do not conceal your body where there are no traces. I was at Yaoshan for thirty years and only clarified this matter.' Why do people nowadays act so rashly? On the cinnabar mountain there is no colorful phoenix; / In the precious palace no crown is retained. Sometimes silly, sometimes foolish— / If one is not on my path, how could one know?"
