18.12

瑞州黃蘗山祇園永泰禪師。隨州人。僧問。如何是祖師西來意。師曰。鐵鑄就。僧擬議。師曰。會麼。僧禮拜。師曰。何不早如此。

Chan Master Yongtai of Qiyuan on Mount Huangbo in Ruizhou was a native of Suizhou. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "Cast of iron." The monk hesitated. The Master said, "Do you understand?" The monk bowed. The Master said, "Why were you not like this sooner?"
