18.14

廬山慧日明禪師上堂。不用心求唯須息見。三祖大師雖然回避金鉤。殊不知已吞紅線。慧日又且不然。不用求真并息見。倒騎牛兮入佛殿。牧笛一聲天地寬。稽首瞿曇真箇黃面。

Chan Master Ming of Huiri on Mount Lu ascended the hall. "There is no need to seek with the mind; one must only rest one's views. Although the Great Master the Third Patriarch avoided the golden hook, he was completely unaware that he had already swallowed the red line. Huiri, however, is not like that: no need to seek truth, nor to rest one's views. Riding the ox backward, I enter the Buddha hall. With a single tune from the shepherd's flute, heaven and earth are broad. Bowing the head to Gautama, he truly has a yellow face!"
