Chan Master Faru of Daochang in Anji Prefecture was a son of the Xu family of Quzhou. He called upon Yungai and awakened to Fenyang's topic on the ten kinds of wisdom sharing one reality. Usually he often spoke of the ten kinds of wisdom sharing one reality, so the monastic groves called him 'Ru of the Ten Shared.' Both Shui'an and Yuanji relied upon him. Yuanji once praised him, saying: 'His cast-iron face is difficult to approach; / casually taking a step, he moves heaven and earth. / Playfully taking up the topic of the ten kinds of wisdom sharing one reality, / he does not fail Huanglong's authentic descendants.' Ascending the hall: "'Setting up knowledge upon knowing and seeing is the root of ignorance; knowing and seeing without seeing is itself nirvāṇa.' It is uncontaminated, true and pure; how could it admit other things within it? Old Śākya threw down his whole body—how will later descendants carry it on? Do you wish to understand? Tongxuan is not of the human realm; with green mountains filling the eyes, where will you seek it?"
