Assistant Administrator Upāsaka Su Zhe, styled Ziyou. In the third year of the Yuanfeng era, while serving as Assistant Magistrate of Suiyang, he was demoted to the post of Director of the Monopoly Bureau in Ruizhou. At that time, Chan Master Shun of Shanglan in Hongzhou had a rapport with his father, Master Wen'an. [Su Zhe] therefore went to visit him, and they enjoyed each other's company immensely. The Duke inquired about the mind Dharma, and Shun pointed to the nidāna of twitching the nose. Thereupon he had an awakening, and composed a verse presenting it: 'In middle age I heard the Way and realized my former errors; / by chance I encountered the old master Shun. / Twitching the nose, I directly plumbed my true face; / shaking my head, I accept no other tongs and hammer. / Withered vine and ragged patch-robe, what business has the Duke? / White wine and green salt, who am I? / Full of gratitude, as the waning moon rises over the eastern porch, / a cup of sweet dew is smooth as malt syrup.'
