Hermitage Master Ru of Tiantai in Taizhou long relied on Fazhen. Due to examining Yunmen's phrase 'Eastern Mountain walks on water', he brought to light his own understanding. The master hid himself in his native mountain, taking apes and deer as companions. The commandery prefect heard of his demeanor and sent an emissary to pressure him into serving as abbot. The master composed a verse saying: 'For thirty years I have lived on this mountain; / For what business do the commandery tallies arrive in the woods? / Do not take petty worldly affairs / To exchange for my life of leisure upon leisure.' He then burned down his hut, and in the end no one knew where he stayed.
