18.51

湘州長興宗朴禪師上堂曰。我有一訣逢人便說。雨下天涼炎天普熱。大眾還會麼。爾若會得眼中著屑。爾若不會今朝敗闕。不見道。別別韶陽老人得一橛。又曰。臘月正嚴寒。草木盡枯乾。幾多名利客。見處黑漫漫。喝一喝。

Chan Master Changxing Zongpu of Xiangzhou ascended the hall and said, "I have a directive that I speak whenever meeting someone: when rain falls it is cool, and when the weather is blazing hot it is hot everywhere. Does the assembly understand? If you understand, dust has fallen into your eyes; if you do not understand, today you have met defeat. Have you not heard it said: 'Different, different—the old man of Shaoyang obtained one half.'" He also said, "The twelfth month is bitterly cold; the plants and trees are all dried up and withered. How many seekers of fame and profit find their views shrouded in total darkness?" He gave a shout.
