18.61

台州萬年處幽禪師上堂。先聖行不到處凡流恰到。凡流既到先聖莫知到與不到。知與不知總置一壁。秖如僧問乾峯。十方薄伽梵。一路涅槃門。未審路頭在甚麼處。峯以拄杖畫一畫曰。在這裏。且道此老與他先聖凡流相去幾何。南山虎齩石羊兒。須向其中識生死。

Chan Master Chuyou of Wannian in Taizhou ascended the hall. "Where former sages cannot reach, ordinary people arrive just in time. When ordinary people have arrived, former sages do not know whether they have reached it or not. Set both knowing and not knowing to one side! Take, for instance, when a monk asked Qianfeng, 'The Bhagavats of the ten directions have one road to the gate of nirvāṇa. Where, I wonder, is the beginning of the road?' Feng made a stroke with his staff and said, 'Right here.' Tell me: how far apart are this old fellow and those former sages and ordinary people? The tiger of South Mountain bites the stone lamb; right within this you must recognize life and death."
