19.20

蘇州吳江聖壽法晏禪師。僧問。祖意西來即不問。今日開堂事若何。師曰。雲生碧嶂。云學人不會。師曰。月落寒潭。乃曰。山頭浪起水底塵飛。結果空花生兒石女。如今即不恁麼。三年一閏九月重陽。冬天日短春天漸長。寒即向火熱即取涼。良久曰。且道佛法在什麼處。不離當處常湛然。覓即知君不可見。喝一喝。

Chan Master Fa'yan of Shengshou in Wujiang, Suzhou. A monk asked, "I do not ask about the Patriarch's meaning coming from the West; what is the matter of opening the hall today?" The Master said, "Clouds arise on the green peaks." The monk said, "The student does not understand." The Master said, "The moon sinks into the cold pool." He then said, "Waves rise on the mountaintops, dust flies at the bottom of the water; flowers in the sky bear fruit, a barren woman gives birth to a child. Nowadays, it is not like that: an intercalary month every three years, the Double Ninth in the ninth month; in winter the days are short, in spring the days gradually lengthen; when cold, face the fire; when hot, seek the cool." After a long pause, he said, "Tell me, where is the Buddha Dharma? Not departing from the present place, it is ever serene. If you seek it, know that it cannot be seen by you." He gave a shout.
