Chan Master Song of Zhangfa in Wuling, Dingzhou. A monk took off his shoes, placed them on his head, and came forward. The master said, "Zhaozhou is still here." The monk took down the shoes and held them up. The master said, "Indeed." The monk picked up the shoes and returned to the assembly. The master said, "Still lacking a little." He then held up his staff and said: / "Walking or sitting, I constantly hold the rabbit-horn staff; / Applying it fully, displaying the forms of dragon and tiger. / Breast Peak exclusively permitted old Shao to thrust it forward; / How many varieties have later generations debated? / There is square and round, there is rescue and salvation; / Striking the iron ox, it rises with the blow. / You must see to it that you fear not the ten-thousand-year vine; / Cut off both ends, desist from speculation! / Neither large nor small, / Propping up the earth and supporting heaven, it is ever brilliant. / Picked up and planted before everyone, / All phenomena, heaven and earth, are completely illuminated!" / He struck once.
