Chan Master Jiang of Baima in the Western Capital. A monk asked, "I know the master has long harbored the jewel in his bag; today you open the hall, please lend it to us briefly for a look." The master said, "I will not lend it, I will not lend it." The monk asked, "Why not lend it?" The master said, "To sell gold requires a buyer of gold." He then said: "If one speaks of buddhas and speaks of patriarchs, one has not yet severed the root and source of birth and death. Even if not a speck of dust is established, the mind still constantly clings to objects. I dare ask everyone: how can one hit the mark just right?" He held up his staff and said, "Look, look! The staff swallows up empty space, but when has empty space ever had any awareness?"
