Chan Master Daohe Zuzhao of Changlu was a son of the Pan clan of Xinghua. A monk asked: "At the unhindered holy gathering, is there still anyone who does not arrive?" The master said: "There is." The monk said: "Who is the one that does not arrive?" The master said: "The iron Kunlun at the feet of the Vajra deity." The monk asked: "'Traveling by night is not permitted; one must arrive by dawn'—what is the meaning of this?" The master said: "A sheep-headed cart pushing the bright moon." The monk said: "What about when one goes right along like that?" The master said: "The road through the Iron Gate is perilous." The monk asked: "What about when 'one hammer strikes twice'?" The master said: "Treading on lotus roots, one returns with a fish." The monk asked: "'A special transmission outside the teachings'—I wonder what is transmitted?" The master said: "An iron pellet." The monk asked: "What about when the journey through a hundred cities is finished?" The master said: "Ahead there is still the checkpoint of Zhaozhou." He ascended the hall and said: "One, two, three, four, five, six— / The blue-eyed barbarian monk cannot count them all. / The mud ox enters the sea and passes to Silla; / The wooden horse chases the wind and reaches India. / India is vast and boundless—where can it be sought? / On the crags of Potalaka, ask Avalokiteśvara. / Samantabhadra claps his hands and laughs, haha! / Return home, oh return! The autumn waters run deep."
