Chan Master Guochang of Baolin in Wuzhou was a son of the Shi clan of Anzhou. The master went into the mountains with Surveillance Vice Commissioner Yang Cigong. While they were touring the mountains together, Yang picked up Mahāsattva [Fu]'s 'meal-rock' and asked: "Since it is a meal-rock, why cannot one bite through it?" The master said: "Only because it is too hard." Yang said: "That still involves superfluous words." The master said: "I wonder how the Surveillance Vice Commissioner would put it?" Yang said: "Hard." The master said: "That too is the second moon." Yang wrote the plaque for the Seven Buddhas Hall, and then asked: "What about when the Seven Buddhas reappear in the world?" The master said: "Each encounter is ever new." He ascended the hall and said: "One is one, two is two; / Smelling it, there is truly no fragrance at all." Abruptly holding up his staff, he struck it once and said: "If you recognize this mountain monk's walking stick, / Do not go toward the South Mountain looking for a turtle-nosed snake!"
