潭州石霜節誠禪師。僧問。古者道。捲簾當白晝。移榻對青山。如何是捲簾當白晝。師曰。過淨瓶來。曰如何是移榻對青山。師曰。却安舊處著。上堂。心外無法法外無心。隨緣蕩蕩更莫沈吟。爾等諸人纔上階道便好回去。更莫待第二杓惡水潑作甚麼。

Chan Master Jiecheng of Shishuang in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "An ancient said, 'Roll up the screen to face broad daylight; move the couch to face the green mountains.' What is rolling up the screen to face broad daylight?" The Master said, "Bring the water jar over." The monk asked, "What is moving the couch to face the green mountains?" The Master said, "Put it back in its former place." Ascending the hall, [the Master said,] "Outside of mind there are no phenomena; outside of phenomena there is no mind. Drifting boundlessly following conditions, ponder no more. As soon as you people step onto the stone steps, it would be best to go back. Why wait for a second ladle of dirty water to be splashed on you?"
