舒州四面山懷清禪師。初住蘄口興化。僧問。臨濟三玄似石女向波中作舞。雲門關棙閃鑠如鷂子過新羅。去此二途興化當行何令。師曰。道什麼。僧云。恁麼則和尚與古人出氣。師曰。再犯不容。僧應喏。師以拄杖打禪床曰。若不點破將謂山僧瞌睡。

Chan Master Huaiqing of Mount Simian in Shuzhou originally resided at Xinghua in Qikou. A monk asked: 'Linji's Three Mysteries are like an infertile woman dancing amid the waves; Yunmen's mechanism flashes like a sparrowhawk flying past Silla. Setting aside these two approaches, what order should Xinghua enforce?' The Master said: 'What did you say?' The monk said: 'In that case, the Upādhyāya is venting frustration on behalf of the ancients.' The Master said: 'A second offense will not be tolerated.' The monk responded, 'Yes.' The Master struck the meditation platform with his staff and said: 'If I had not exposed it, people would think this mountain monk was dozing off.'
