2.73

澧州藥山利昱禪師。上堂。山河大地日月星辰。與諸上座同生。三世諸佛與諸上座同參。三藏聖教與諸上座同時。還信得及麼。若也信得及。陝府鐵牛吞却乾坤。雖然如是。被法身礙却轉身不得。須知有出身之路。作麼生是諸上座出身之路。道道。良久曰。若道不得永沈苦海。珍重。僧問。格外之談乞師垂示。師曰。要道也不難。曰。恁麼則萬仞碧潭許垂一線也。師曰。大眾笑爾。

Chan Master Liyu of Yaoshan in Lizhou ascended the hall and said: 'The mountains, rivers, and great earth, the sun, moon, and stars, are born together with all of you senior venerable ones; the Buddhas of the three periods practice together with you senior venerable ones; the sacred teachings of the Tripiṭaka are contemporaneous with you senior venerable ones. Can you truly have faith in this? If you can have faith in this, the iron ox of Shanzhou swallows the universe. Even though it is like this, being obstructed by the Dharmakāya, you cannot turn your body. You must know there is a path to extricate oneself. What is the path for you senior venerable ones to extricate yourselves? Speak, speak!' After a long silence, he said: 'If you cannot speak, you will sink forever in the sea of suffering. Take care.' A monk asked: 'I beg the Master to demonstrate discourse that goes beyond the rules.' The Master said: 'If you want to speak of it, it is not difficult.' The monk said: 'Then into an emerald pool of ten thousand fathoms, a single line is permitted to be dropped?' The Master said: 'The assembly laughs at you.'
