Academician of the Hanlin Academy, the Upāsaka of the Eastern Slope, Su Shi, courtesy name Zizhan. Because he stayed overnight at Donglin and discussed the discourse on insentient things with Zhaojue, he had an insight. At dawn, he presented a verse: 'The sound of the stream is indeed the broad and long tongue; / Are not the colors of the mountains the pure body? / The eighty-four thousand verses of last night— / How on another day can I cite them to others?' Before long, he arrived in Jingnan and heard that the sharp dynamic of Chan Master Hao of Yuquan was untouchable. The gentleman intended to pay respects to him, so he sought an audience in plain clothes. Quan asked: 'What is the honorable official’s surname?' The gentleman said: 'My surname is Scale (Cheng)—a scale that weighs the elders under heaven.' Quan shouted and said: 'Tell me, how much does this single shout weigh?' The gentleman had no reply. Thereupon he treated him with honor and respect. Later, passing by Jinshan, someone painted the gentleman’s portrait. The gentleman playfully inscribed it: 'Mind like wood that has already turned to ash, / Body like a boat that is not tied. / You ask about the achievements of my lifetime: / Huangzhou, Huizhou, Qiongzhou.'
