20.24

福州雪峯大智禪師僧問。如何是祖師西來意。師銜拂柄示之。僧曰。此是香嚴底和尚又作麼生。師便喝。僧大笑。師叱曰。這野狐精。

Chan Master Dazhi of Xuefeng in Fuzhou. A monk asked: 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch’s coming from the West?' The Master held the handle of the whisk in his mouth to show him. The monk said: 'This is Xiangyan’s; what about the upādhyāya’s?' The Master shouted. The monk laughed heartily. The Master scolded him: 'This wild fox spirit!'
