20.26

婺州承天澄月禪師。僧問。如何是道。師曰。殘陽戀幽草。問如何是佛法大意。師曰。今年柴米貴。臨示寂有頌曰。去也何之。住兮何所。去住何從。超然絕侶。臨岐一句向誰舉。銀潢夜白孤蟾吐。言畢趺坐而逝。

Chan Master Chengyue of Chengtian in Wuzhou. A monk asked: 'What is the Dao?' The Master said: 'The lingering sun cherishes the secluded grass.' He asked: 'What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?' The Master said: 'This year, firewood and rice are expensive.' Approaching his passing, he had a verse: 'Departing, where to go? / Staying, in what place? / From where does departing or staying come? / Transcendent, cut off from companionship. / Facing the fork in the road, to whom can this one phrase be raised? / The Silver River is white at night; a solitary toad spits [light].' Having finished speaking, he sat cross-legged and passed away.
