Chan Master Yongqi of Langye in Chuzhou was a native of Xiangyang. A monk asked, "Why does a person inside the hermitage not see the affairs outside the hermitage?"
The Master said, "The eastern house lights a lamp; the western house sits in the dark."
[The monk] asked, "What are the affairs inside the hermitage?"
The Master said, "Where are the eyes?"
[The monk] said, "At the three gates, palms joined."
The Master said, "What relevance is there?"
He then said, "'At the fifth watch, the waning moon sets; / at dawn, white clouds fly.' / Distinctly, it is an affair right before one's eyes, / yet not the dynamic function right before one's eyes. / Since it is an affair right before one's eyes, why is it not the dynamic function right before one's eyes?" After a good while, he said, "'From here, the road to the Western Heavens / is distant, more than a hundred thousand [li].'"
He ascended the hall and remained silent for a good while. Clapping his hands once, he said, "A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha! Do you understand? Every single phenomenon is originally the Dharma." Thereupon he took up his staff and said, "This is this mountain monk's staff. Which one is the original Dharma? Can you settle it?" He struck [the ground] once.
