21.21

郢州子陵山自瑜禪師。僧問。如何是古佛心。師曰。赤脚䟕泥冷似氷。曰未審意旨如何。師曰。休要拕泥帶水。問泗洲大聖為甚麼楊州出現。師曰。業在其中。曰意旨如何。師曰。降尊就卑。曰謝和尚答話。師曰。賊是小人智過君子。

Chan Master Ziyu of Mount Ziling in Yingzhou. A monk asked: "What is the ancient Buddha-mind?" The Master said: "Barefoot in deep mud, cold as ice." The monk asked: "I wonder, what is the meaning?" The Master said: "No need to drag mud and carry water." A monk asked: "Why did the Great Sage of Sizhou appear in Yangzhou?" The Master said: "Karma is within it." The monk said: "What is the meaning?" The Master said: "Lowering oneself from high status to approach the lowly." The monk said: "Thank you, Upādhyāya, for answering the question." The Master said: "A thief is a petty person, yet his wit surpasses a gentleman."
