Chan Master [Yuelin] Zhen of Yuelin in Mingzhou ascended the hall. 'The ancients said: At the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, it is fitting to administer thirty blows of the stick to hold them accountable. Yuelin is not like this. In the assembly on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa, the Bhagavat twirled a flower and Kāśyapa smiled. Just at that moment, they should properly have been given thirty blows of the stick! Why is this? In a time of great peace, they forcefully stirred up weapons and war, teaching people to blow the great Dharma conch and beat the great Dharma drum. When taking a step, golden lotuses flutter; when sitting upright, the jeweled seat is towering and majestic. The Brahmā King leads the way in front, surrounded by fragrant flowers; Śakra follows behind, flanked by ranks of dragons and elephants. This has caused later descendants to imitate them one after another. In groups of three and five, they all claim an extraordinary demeanor; kalpa after kalpa, wave upon wave, they are unwilling to return home and sit securely. Flapping their lips and wagging their tongues, they are just like bells, chimestones, mouth organs, and pipes; raising their arms and gesturing at their chests, they are no less numerous than rice plants, hemp, bamboo, and reeds. What is more, flaunting roaming through mountains and disporting in waters, parting the grass and gazing at the wind, they talk in front of people until stones nod their heads, and celestial flowers fly down and strike the ground. They too properly deserve thirty blows of the stick! Tell me, how should the merit of the summer retreat be rewarded?' After a long pause, he said, 'When the myriad treasures achieve their task, what is there of rich or thin? When the price weighs a thousand jun, it naturally tips low or high.'
