秀州華亭觀音和尚。僧問。如何是佛。師曰。半夜烏龜火裏行。曰意作麼生。師曰。虛空無背面。僧禮拜。師便打。

Upādhyāya Guanyin of Huating in Xiuzhou. A monk asked, 'What is the Buddha?' The master said, 'At midnight, the black turtle walks in the fire.' The monk said, 'What does this mean?' The master said, 'Empty space has neither front nor back.' The monk bowed. The master then struck him.
