Chan Master Shanchao of Yuquan in Jingmen Commandery. A monk asked, "Leaving aside the staff, whether in speech, silence, movement, or stillness, how do you instruct people?" The master drew a circle. The monk said, "This is still entanglement." The master said, "Finished." After a long pause, the master addressed the assembly, saying: "The wondrous nature is perfectly luminous, beyond all names and forms. Even if Buddhas numerous as the sands of the Ganges displayed the sevenfold eloquence, they could not speak its name. Though lineage masters of past and present possess the five eyes, they cannot discern its form. Only when the mind is like broken tiles, rubble, and walls will there be a fraction of accord. Virtuous friends, if you can turn your light around to shine back on the fundamental spiritual source, its constant radiance will appear before you and worldly vexations will cease at once. Cessation is bodhi itself; the supremely pure and bright mind originally pervades worlds numerous as sands, not obtained from anyone else. May I venture to ask you all: from where, then, is it obtained?" After a long pause, he said: "Year after year, the slender willows are green year after year. In the second month, the peach blossoms are red in the second month."
