Chan Master Shiding of Longxing in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "What is the scenery of Xiaoxiang?" The master said, "When night deepens, apes cry at Yuelu." The monk said, "What about the person within the scene?" The master said, "Meeting on the road, they do not dismount; each has their own journey ahead." The monk asked, "What is the Way?" The master said, "Flowered streets and willow lanes." The monk said, "What about the person within the Way?" The master said, "Laughing and chatting heartily." He then said, "The autumn wind over several nights has gradually grown cold; patch-robed monks early on feel cold in their bodies. Staying awake through the night deliberating—how intolerable that the Patriarch wanders recklessly! They do not realize that in thought after thought, Śākyamuni appears in the world; at every step, Maitreya is born below. If you suddenly bump into it, it is entirely your own spiritual light. How can one speak of one's own spiritual light?" After a long pause, he said, "A wheel of bright moon shines upon the Xiaoxiang." He gave a shout. He also said, "In former years I once reached the summit of White Cloud Peak; attending morning audiences and evening queries, I relied on teachers to awaken to the Way. In the bustling markets and red dust, not a few have been worn to death, still scurrying about, clinging to life until old age. Tut! This skin bag is foul, impure, and easily destroyed; yet one craves desires and pleasures without knowing weariness. Studying the Buddhas and patriarchs, one never understands. Commendable is old Hanshan, sleeping on clouds with a rock for a pillow. Consider Shide's song: loving to dwell within deep cliffs, wearing a rain cape of straw for bedding, a bamboo hat for a canopy. But as this mountain monk discourses in this way, is there still Buddha Dharma or not?" After a long pause, he said, "The person of non-action and no concerns leaps beyond the red dust." He gave a shout.
