Hermitage Master Zongshi of Jingzhao Hermitage at Deshan in Dingzhou. A monk asked, "Who is the master of the hermitage?" The master said, "From the beginning, I never consented." The monk hesitated. The master said, "If you understand, understand at once. That which is fundamental cannot be given a name or designated by words." The monk made to open his mouth; the master immediately beat him out. In his room, the master would often show a whisk to the assembly, saying: "Calling it a whisk is still not it; not calling it a whisk, you deliberately fail to recognize it. What do you call it?" When a monk asked for further instruction, the master answered him with a verse: "I have a single whisk; / For its use, there is no other arrangement. / Sometimes hung upon a pine branch, / Letting its head droop and its horns show."
