Chan Master Zhiming of Huanglong in Ezhou was a native of Raozhou. One day, he ascended the hall and the assembly had just gathered. The Master then said: 'One must not open one's eyes any further to talk in one's sleep!' and stepped down from the seat. Ascending the hall: 'A single directive from north to south, cutting through nails and severing iron. Take care not to engage in reflection, turning it into rutted tracks.' The Master went with Inspector Hu to the Two Sages of Gong'an. Hu asked: 'Bodhidharma told Emperor Wu of Liang, "Vast and empty, nothing holy." Why then does Gong'an have two sages?' The Master said: 'A single drop of ink forms dragons in two places.'
