22.19

杭州慈雲道清禪師。嘗垂語曰。箭鋒相拄底。隨機乃絲毫無差。邊方人語不相暗。如何辨他子細。又曰。格外明機底。問南則以北為酬。飢餒人急切相投。未審將何賑濟。又曰。妙用縱橫底臨機辨若懸河毘耶城彼上人來未審若為酬對。又曰。寒灰枯木底。到這裏無言。家中給侍之人。日用如何指授。又來參扣者設此數問。問之多不契。

Chan Master Daoqing of Ciyun in Hangzhou once set forth these phrases: 'When arrow tips hit each other, in accordance with the trigger there is not a hairsbreadth of error. The languages of the frontier people are not understood by one another; how can you discern them in detail?' He also said: 'For one who illuminates the function beyond the patterns, when asked about the south he responds with the north. When starving people come running in dire distress, I wonder what you will provide to relieve them?' He also said: 'For one whose wondrous function ranges freely, facing the trigger his eloquence is like a cascading river. When that superior person from the city of Vaiśālī comes, I wonder how you will respond?' He also said: 'For one of cold ashes and withered wood, having reached this place there are no words. How do you direct and instruct the servants in your household in their daily activities?' When practitioners came to consult him, he set forth these several questions; when asked, most did not accord.
