22.32

南嶽祝融上封慧和禪師上堂。未陞此座已前。盡大地人成佛已畢。更有何法可說。更有何生可利。況菩提煩惱本自寂然。生死涅槃猶如昨夢。門庭施設誑謼小兒。方便門開羅紋結角。於衲僧面前皆成幻惑。且道衲僧有甚麼長處。拈起拄杖曰。孤根自有擎天勢。不比尋常曲彔枝。卓拄杖下座。

Chan Master Huihe of Shangfeng on Mount Zhurong in Nanyue ascended the hall: "Before I ascended this seat, all the people of the whole earth had already completed Buddhahood. What further Dharma is there to preach? What further sentient beings are there to benefit? Moreover, bodhi and afflictions are originally tranquil; birth-and-death and nirvāṇa are like yesterday's dream. The arrangements of institutional styles are to deceive and shout at little children; the opening of expedient gates forms nets and entanglements. Before a patch-robed monk, all these become illusory deceptions. Tell me, what special forte does a patch-robed monk have?" Holding up his staff, he said, "A solitary root naturally holds the power to support heaven; / It is not like an ordinary winding branch." Striking the staff, he stepped down from the seat.
