23.36

黃州東禪惟資禪師。上堂曰。信手拈來無非佛事。何故頭頭顯理物物皆宗。念念釋迦出世。步步彌勒下生。若信得及把得住。便請坐斷報化佛頭。高步毘盧頂上。拈拄杖云。且道拄杖子有何長處。良久畫一畫云。能殺能活能縱能奪。更有一般堪嘆處。不風流處也風流。卓一下。

Chan Master Weizi of Dongchan in Huangzhou ascended the hall and said, 'Taken up at will with one's hand, nothing is not a Buddha's work. Why? Everything reveals the principle, each thing is the source. In every thought Śākyamuni appears in the world; with every step Maitreya descends to be born. If you can fully believe this and hold fast to it, then please sit atop the heads of the reward and transformation Buddhas, and stride high above the crown of Vairocana.' Holding up his staff, he said, 'Tell me, what strong point does the staff have?' After a good while, he drew a line and said, 'It can kill, it can give life, it can release, it can seize. And there is yet another point worthy of praise: where there is no romance, it is romantic nevertheless.' He struck the staff once.
