Chan Master Daowan of Shouning in Yingcheng, Anzhou. A monk asked, 'Clouds follow the dragon, wind follows the tiger; as yet I do not know, what does the Upādhyāya follow?' The master said, 'Drawing a single character in the open sky.' The monk said, 'What extraordinary thing is obtained?' The master said, 'The Great Compassionate One with a Thousand Hands cannot lift it.' A monk asked, '"In the lands of the ten directions there is only the Dharma of the One Vehicle." What is the Dharma of the One Vehicle?' The master said, 'A bushel cannot measure it to the end.' The monk said, 'If so, then "moving with deportment illuminates the ancient path, not falling into silent mechanics."' The master said, 'What are silent mechanics?' The monk lifted his head to look. The master held up his whisk. The monk gave a shout. The master said, 'Splendidly silent!' Ascending the hall, he said, 'Ancient people saw this moon; / People of today see this moon. / This moon endures forever; / Ancient and modern people are no different. / If a person's mind is like the moon, / The blue pool's light is bright and pure. / It is definitely the mind's source; / Beyond this explanation there is no explanation. / Bah!' Ascending the hall, he said, 'Chan worthies! The three months of winter have come to an end, and the thirtieth night of the twelfth month is about to arrive. How will you prepare for it?' After a good while, he said, 'Robes torn, emaciated bones exposed; / Roof broken, watching the stars to sleep.'
