23.40

泉州乾峯圓慧禪師上堂。達磨正宗衲僧巴鼻。堪嗟迷者成群開眼瞌睡。頭上是天脚下是地。耳朵聞聲鼻孔出氣。敢問。雲堂之徒時中甚處安置。還見麼。可憐雙林傅大士。却言秖這語聲是。咄。

Chan Master Yuanhui of Qianfeng in Quanzhou ascended the hall and said, 'Bodhidharma's true lineage is the patch-robed monk's hold. Lamentably, the deluded form crowds, nodding off with eyes wide open. Above the head is heaven, below the feet is earth. Ears hear sounds, nostrils exhale air. May I ask: the disciples of the Cloud Hall, where do they reside at all times? Do you see it? How pitiable is Mahāsattva Fu of Shuanglin, who instead said, "Just this sound of speech is it!" Bah!'
