Old Woman Yu was a person from Jinling. She made a living by selling fried rice cakes in the market. She regularly followed the congregation to attend and question Langye. Langye instructed her with Linji's gong'an of the 'True Person of No Rank'. One day, she heard a beggar singing the Lianhua Yue, which went: 'Were it not for Liu Yi delivering the letter, / How could one have reached Lake Dongting?' Suddenly experiencing a great awakening, she threw her rice-cake platter onto the ground. Her husband glanced at her from the side and said, 'Are you mad?' The old woman slapped him and said, 'This is not your realm.' She went to see Langye. Langye saw her from afar and knew her attainment. He asked, 'Which is the True Person of No Rank?' The old woman answered immediately: 'There is a person of no rank, / With six arms and three heads, exerting wrath. / Cleaving Mount Hua with one blow, it splits into two paths; / The ten-thousand-year flowing water knows no spring.' From then on, her fame spread widely. Whenever a monk arrived, she would say, 'My boy, my boy!' If the monk hesitated, she would shut the door. Chan Master Fodeng Xun went to test her. Seeing him, the old woman asked as before. Xun said, 'Where is your father?' The old woman turned her body and bowed to the exposed pillar. Xun promptly kicked her over, saying, 'And here I thought you had something extraordinary!' As he walked out, the old woman scrambled up and said, 'My boy, my boy, come here and let me cherish you!' Xun never looked back. Head Monk An arrived. The old woman asked, 'Where have you come from?' An said, 'Deshan.' The old woman said, 'Deshan is so very much this old woman's son.' An said, 'Whose son is this old woman?' The old woman said, 'Being questioned by the head monk like this, I was made to stand right here and piss.' The old woman once made a verse on Mazu's illness, saying: 'Sun-Face, Moon-Face, lightning in the sky. / Although it cut off the tongues of patch-robed monks throughout the world, / Clearly, it only expressed half of it.'
