Chan Master Xiangyan Yisong Rubi of Dengzhou was a son of the Rao family of Fuzhou. He ascended the hall: "How excessively rushed is the subtle shift of change and transformation! A kṣaṇa, thought to thought, a single breath. Among the eighty-four thousand expedient gates, tell me, which gate can one not enter? Entering or not entering, at dawn the rain beats down and wets the plantains. Earnestly I further ask the person within: outside the door, they stand boldly facing one another." Hearing the cry of a woodpecker, he spoke a verse: "'Tock, tock, tock! / Inside there are grubs, outside it pecks. / How many vast crowds of drowsy people— / even a punch behind the crown of the head does not awaken them! / If you do not awaken, listen again to this mountain monk: / Tock, tock, tock!'"
