Chan Master Huangbo Weichu of Ruizhou was a son of the Cai clan of Changzhou. Ascending the hall, he said, 'I observed elder brother Zong sitting erect in silent witheredness throughout his life, having a so-called withered-wood body. Never did his lips and tongue chatter noisily, treating the words and teachings of the Buddhas and Patriarchs as a sectarian gate. He only required that one rest completely, hundred percent; naturally one would not cling to this leaking shell.' A monk asked, 'Since one does not cling to this leaking shell, I wonder how one preserves it?' The master said, 'There is no place for you to apply your mind.' The monk said, 'Does the upādhyāya have no expedient means?' The master said, 'When a flat pancake has no gravy, how could pressing sand yield oil?'
