24.30

福州西禪慧舜禪師。真定府人。上堂。五日一參三八普說。千說萬說橫說竪說。忽有箇漢出來道。說即不無。爭奈三門頭兩箇不肯。山僧即向他道瞎漢。若不得他兩箇。西禪大似不遇知音。

Chan Master Xichan Huishun of Fuzhou was a native of Zhending Prefecture. Ascending the hall, he said, 'Every five days an entry into the room; on days with three and eight, a general discourse. A thousand discourses and ten thousand discourses, spoken horizontally and spoken vertically. Suddenly a fellow comes forth and says, "It is not that there is no speaking, but what about the two at the monastery gate who refuse to agree?" This mountain monk would immediately say to him: "Blind fellow! Were it not for those two, Xichan would very much be without an intimate friend."'
