Chan Master Shanquan Fazhi of Changzhou was a son of the Bo clan of Shan Prefecture. In his prime, he shaved his head at Shengguo Monastery in the Western Capital and studied Huayan. Leaving it behind, he called upon Jin of Nanyang, and next visited Zhi of Dahong. For over ten years he had no realization. Later, at a word from Hongzhi, he was suddenly enlightened. He went forth to reside at Shanquan, and next moved to Jinsu. Ascending the hall, he said, 'Before the bright moon hangs high and shines, / The white-eyebrowed one leans on the jade balustrade. / In the deep night the rain passes, wind and thunder cease; / Guests scatter from the cloud pavilion, wine bowls are dry.' Ascending the hall, he said, 'In the three realms there are no dharmas; where can one seek the mind? A startled snake enters the grass; a flying bird leaves the forest. Rain passes over the mountain hall, the autumn night is quiet; city sounds never reach the solitary summit.'
