Chan Master Daoxuan of Touzi in Shuzhou served Tianyi for a long time without any awakening. Tianyi berated him. For more than a month, the master forgot to eat and sleep. One night, hearing the sound of the night watchman's bell, he suddenly had a powerful awakening and said: 'Stop, stop! A single sound penetrates straight through the path of the blue sky. The moon is bright in the cold pool—who knows? The mud ox has knocked over and snapped the coral tree.' When Tianyi heard of this, he appointed him to the office of the canon library. Later, when he was abbot, whenever anyone questioned him, he would make the gesture of ringing a bell with his whisk.
