Head Monk Yongxuan of Huaiyu in Xin prefecture was a son of the Peng clan of Siming. He became a monk in his youth and went straight to the monastic assemblies. He attended on Letan at Huangbo. One day, returning from begging for food in Linchuan, he happened upon Letan's evening address, which included: "When a single leaf drifts into the void, autumn is seen; / The Dharma-body must penetrate through the clamor." Hearing this, the master grasped the meaning, and Letan verified it. Later he relied on Dahui, who also said that he was of his own kind. Because of this, famous nobles and grand ministers invited and honored him at rows of monasteries, but he did not take up the posts. He once had a verse on Dayu's response to the topic of the Buddha, saying: "The saw cuts open the steelyard weight; / An old poem by Du [Fu]: / 'Red rice pecked to scraps, parrot's grains; / Green parasol tree grows old, phoenix's branch.'"
