25.30

潭州南嶽承天惠連禪師。僧問。如何是承天境。師拈起拂子。僧云。如何是境中人。師擊禪床一下。僧云。人境已蒙師指示。向上宗乘事若何。師挂拂子於舊處。乃曰。湖南近日稍別。小雪應時及節。但管積嶽堆山。勿論春寒秋熱。呵呵呵真可悅。庭下黃柑香不徹。上堂舉扇子曰。犀牛扇子古今揚。七十峯前九夏長。二六時中如可用。分明頭角好商量。且問。諸禪德商量箇什麼。良久曰。任爾千般巧。終無兩樣風。乃放扇子。上堂拈拄杖曰。諸供養中法供養最勝。所謂法供養者。山供養水水供養山。僧堂供養佛殿。佛殿供養僧堂。諸人供養老僧。老僧供養諸人。良久曰。供養已畢念普供養真言。老僧忘却。且教拄杖子念與諸人。卓一下云。靜處薩婆訶。上堂曰。鬧市裏識取古佛。百草頭上薦取老僧鬧市裏古佛且致。百草頭上老僧作麼生薦。乃云。不是逢人誇好手。大都品格合風流。喝一喝。

Chan Master Huilian of Chengtian on Mount Nanyue in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "What is the environment of Chengtian?" The master held up his whisk. The monk asked, "What is the person within the environment?" The master struck the meditation bench once. The monk said, "The person and the environment have already received the master's indication. What about the matter of the supreme school?" The master hung the whisk back in its former place, and then said: "Hunan has recently been slightly different: / The Light Snow comes according to its proper season. / Just let it pile into peaks and accumulate into hills, / Regardless of spring chill or autumn heat. / Hahaha, truly delightful! / The yellow tangerines below the courtyard are continuously fragrant." Ascending the hall, he held up a fan and said, "The rhinoceros fan has been extolled through past and present; / Before seventy peaks, the ninety days of summer are long. / If it can be used throughout the twelve periods of the day, / Distinct horns are fine to discuss. But tell me, what are the venerable Chan practitioners discussing?" After a long pause, he said, "Allow for your thousand kinds of cleverness; / In the end there are not two styles of wind." Then he put down the fan. Ascending the hall, he took up his staff and said, "Among all offerings, the Dharma offering is supreme. What is called the Dharma offering is: mountains offer to water, water offers to mountains; the monks' hall offers to the Buddha hall, the Buddha hall offers to the monks' hall; all of you offer to this old monk, and this old monk offers to all of you." After a long pause, he said, "The offerings are already finished. Recite the Universal Offering Dhāraṇī. This old monk has forgotten it; let the staff recite it for you all." Striking once, he said, "Svāhā in a quiet place!" Ascending the hall, he said, "Recognize the ancient Buddha in the noisy market; acknowledge this old monk atop the hundred grasses. Setting aside the ancient Buddha in the noisy market for a moment, how do you acknowledge this old monk atop the hundred grasses?" He then said, "It is not boasting of one's skill when meeting others; / By and large, character harmonizes with elegance." He gave a shout.
