Chan Master Pujing of Chongshèng on Mount Jun in Yuezhou. A monk asked, "What is the environment of Mount Jun?" The master said, "The temple dwells upon a misty island, / In all four directions, only billows and waves." The monk asked, "What is the person within the environment?" The master said, "Facing south, looking at the Northern Dipper." The monk said, "The person and the environment have already received the master's indication. What about the matter of the supreme school?" The master said, "Beyond the railing, a clear breeze rises; / In the lake, white waves are born." [The monk] said, "Thank you for answering the question." The master said, "This old monk's transgression." He then held up his staff and said: "Look, look at the staff, the staff! / Born upon the rocks of a hanging cliff. / Now brought forth before you people, / Freely raising wind and stirring waves." He then threw it down. Ascending the hall again, he said, "Magadha shut its room, and Vimalakīrti held his tongue; Kāśyapa smiled faintly, and Bodhidharma gazed at the wall. Old Xue rolled balls, and Heshan beat the drum; Mi'yan raised the wooden fork, and Qingping dragged stones. This band of fellows each flaunted their tricks, none uttering a word of instruction. How are later people to grasp it? Do not blame this mountain monk for not knowing how to speak of Chan; I just build and repair the monastery gates, providing a bowl of congee and a meal of rice to receive those coming and going. If it is speaking of Chan and speaking of the Dao, other quarters naturally have it."
