Chan Master Daowu Chufang of Tanzhou. A monk asked, "In the past Daowu said, 'I will not say life, and I will not say death.' Why does the Upādhyāya say it today?" The Master said, "Officially, not even a needle is admitted; privately, carts and horses pass through." The monk said, "Truly, Letan has no different water; the pure breeze is naturally unlike the ordinary." The Master said, "A clever patch-robed monk understands two upon being pointed to one." He then said, "All of you, throughout the twelve periods of the day, do not misapply your minds! Overhead is heaven; underfoot is earth. It is bright in the morning and dark in the evening; the water is green and the mountains are blue. Things and forms are distinct throughout all eternity. If you undertake to bear it in this way, already you are raising complications where there was nothing amiss. How much more so seeking the abstruse in words and searching for the wondrous in phrases! That is truly burying oneself. You had better return to the hall and drink tea!"
