Chan Master Tanwan of Mingyin on West Mountain in Pingjiang Prefecture was a native of the Huang clan of Wenzhou. He visited monasteries everywhere. In the gengzi year of the Xuanhe era, he returned to Zhongfu. Just then, the imperial court decreed that Buddhist monks be changed into Daoist 'virtuous gentlemen.' The Master and several like-minded companions entered Toutuo Rock, subsisting on pine needles to keep themselves. After some time, Yuanwu received an imperial decree to reside on this mountain; he came in person to the rock and ordered them to shave their hair and beards. When Yuanwu was summoned to fill the vacancy at Tianning in the capital, the Master went along with him and was appointed to oversee the Ocean of Fragrant Waters. Soon after, raising the mallet and striking the drum, he suddenly became clear about the Great Dharma. Whenever anyone asked him anything, he would always answer, 'Don't pay attention.' Thus his peers all called him 'Don't-Pay-Attention.' After becoming abbot, he ascended the hall and said, 'You have a pair of eyes, and I too have a pair of eyes. If you deceive, you merely deceive yourself. If you become a Buddha or become a patriarch, this old monk has no share in you. If you become a donkey or become a horse, this old monk cannot save you.' When a group of donors came up the mountain and requested him to ascend the hall, he recited a verse: 'I have no special merit, my fame is hollow; / Thank you for coming especially with such earnest care. / Mingyin has no Dharma worthy of being bequeathed, / Merely swinging open the mountain gate for you in vain.'
