28.39

上又問曰。頻呼小玉元無事只要檀郎認得聲。此圓悟所得處。只是要人認得聲。師對。昔有陳度支。問道於五祖演和尚。五祖云。小艶詩中亦是說禪。時圓悟侍立。因問云。如何是禪。五祖云。頻呼小玉元無事只要檀郎認得聲。如何是祖師西來意。庭前柏樹子。如何是佛麻三斤。圓悟遂長噓一聲忽然有悟。時恰有雞啼。圓悟云。爾亦會禪。五祖云。汝作麼生會。圓悟云。去却胸中物喪盡目前機。五祖云。此漢徹了也。

The Emperor also asked, "'Frequently calling Xiaoyu though there is nothing the matter, / only wanting her lover to recognize the sound of her voice'—was this what Yuanwu attained? Was it merely wanting one to recognize the sound of the voice?" The Master replied, "In the past, Vice Minister of Revenue Chen asked Upādhyāya Wuzu Yan about the Way. Wuzu said, 'Even in the verse of "Xiaoyan" Chan is spoken of.' At that time Yuanwu was attending upon him, and so he asked, 'What is Chan?' Wuzu said, 'Frequently calling Xiaoyu though there is nothing the matter, / only wanting her lover to recognize the sound of her voice. What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West? The cypress tree in front of the courtyard. What is the Buddha? Three pounds of hemp.' Yuanwu then let out a long sigh and suddenly had an awakening. At that moment a rooster happened to crow. Yuanwu said, 'Do you also understand Chan?' Wuzu said, 'How do you understand it?' Yuanwu said, 'Cast away what is in the chest, and exhaust every mechanism before one's eyes.' Wuzu said, 'This fellow has thoroughly penetrated it!'"
