The Emperor laughed loudly. The Emperor viewed the portrait of Chan Master Yuanwu. The Master read the inscription of praise he had written: / 'A fine, unattached old patch-robed monk, / painted in ten-tenths resemblance. / In eight terms he dwelled in monasteries across the land, / and wherever he met anyone, he discussed only this matter. / Ocean-mouthed eloquence surging with great waves, / yet in the end he did not speak a single word. / Huiyuan blocked the essential principles of the lineage, / shouldering the burden, pacing broadly with great strides. / The forge swiftly brought down the tongs and hammer, / upholding the path that points upward.'
