The Emperor said, "The other day, in a light slumber and dream, I suddenly heard the sound of a bell and woke up. I wonder how it is with dreaming and waking?" The Master replied, "Is Your Majesty asking about the one in the dream, or the one who has awakened? If you ask about the one who has awakened, right now that is precisely sleep-talking. If you ask about the one in the dream, dreaming and waking are not different; whom would you have distinguish between them? Dreams are illusions; knowing illusion, one immediately abandons it; abandoning illusion, one is immediately awake. The awakened mind does not move. Therefore it is said: 'If one can turn things around, one is identical to the Tathāgata.'"
